about

What people are saying about Distance and Fortune so far…

“lyrical skills that easily evoke Elvis Costello on a magnanimous day; and wiry Keith Richards riffs which simply reek with the sonic simplicity of Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’…If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that this is the sound of someone who’s completely confident in the knowledge that he can do just about anything he wants to in the studio—but I do and he can..”
-Jeffrey Morgan, official biographer for the Stooges and Alice Cooper

“…backed by revved-up Chuck Berry licks that would make the New York Dolls proud…and poetic resignation worthy of John Prine…Distance and Fortune has a literate pulse but beats with a rock & roll heart.”
-Austinist

“To listen to Jonny Burke in more wistful, introspective moments on his debut album, Distance And Fortune, and then to look at this young guy in his 20s… It doesn’t seem like enough time and experience could have crossed his path to leave us with that world-weary, knowing drawl and the insights of a wise old soul.”
-Julie Stoller, Hybrid Magazine

“That keening, lilting voice is what hooks the listener… the guitar trade-off between Burke and producer Marc Ford is dynamite… an engaging, impression-making debut… 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) “ – Austin Music and Entertainment

” 3 stars (out of 4)..”- LA Daily News

“Jonny Burke’s songs provide hope that true songwriting and honest music have not been lost after all.” -Ryan Bingham

“Jonny Burke’s debut is an impressive affair as he goes from Stones-like rock ’n’ roll to…John Prine/Townes Van Zandt wisdom. Dude’s real. You can’t bottle him up in any one category. In a word: eclectic” -Mike Greenblatt, Aquarian Weekly

“The bottom line is Burke is a gifted writer…he not only knows what he’s doing, he’s doing it with literate grit.”
-Jim Beal Jr., San Antonio Express News

“..hits the pleasing sonic spot with a winning blend of wit, warmth, and rompin’ tunefulness. Jonny Burke’s cool raspy voice and refreshingly plain-spoken songwriting make for a strong and appealing double whammy...a fine and impressive full-length debut album.”
-Jersey Beat

“Jonny has that star thing. He has that way of making eye contact with all of the people in the audience at once.” -James McMurtry

“…when you push ‘play,’ Exile-era Rolling Stones influences abound. Despite the easy musical comparisons, Burke’s got a style all his own.” -Shepherd Express Milkwaukee

“4 stars (out of 5)..”
-McKeesport Daily News

“Distance and Fortune frequently haunts the Stones celebrated Exile era…a distinct tone both timely and timeless, a musical call toward the future with eyes doubling down on the past.”
-Texas Music

“…one of those rare, sure-footed debuts that comes fully formed…this is an album brimming with confidence and chutzpah.” -Alex Green, Caught in the Carousel

“Jonny Burke does it just the way you like it – simple and genuine.” -Marc Ford

“…as impressive as Burke’s writing (and rocking) is throughout this Marc Ford produced set, it’s his voice that’s the ultimate charmer.”
